00. Start here

Welcome. This site is a collection of ideas and resources I've compiled over the years to help myself and others on our paths through life. This is how I do things. Use what works for you and leave the rest. It's not for everyone and that's okay. Peace of mind and improved quality of life is the mission. Follow in order or bounce around to different topics. Enjoy.

01. Just 'bout that action, Boss

Marshawn Lynch dropped one of the greatest quotes of all time in a brief interview with Deion Sanders. youtu.be/cKTWiRrSEG4 Simple yet profound. I've wasted a lot of time talking, planning, overanalyzing, and procrastinating but nothing changes until I start doing. No one cares what you're going to do, they care what you did. Just start. Get the momentum going by taking action.

02. The key to life is balance

A balanced life consists of 3 areas: Health, Wealth, and Experiences. If I spend too much time in one area, the others suffer.

Therefore I break each day into 3 parts. I call it the Tri-phasic Day.

The first part of the day I focus on myself. Me time. My morning routine consists of walking my dog, meditating, mobility, physical training, and learning. I'm focused on increasing my mental and physical abilities. Consistent progress. I don't check emails, take calls, or text. It can wait. This time is precious.

After getting my blood flowing and my mind right, the second part of my day I use my capabilities to contribute to society and earn a living. "Do work, son" as Big Black used to say. I'm highly focused during this time of the day and I use Basecamp to keep everything together. I never work past 6pm.

After I've done my job, the last part of the the day I spend time having fun experiencing life with the people I love. Laugh, make memories, go out, chill, whatever. This is reason I do the first 2 parts of the day.

Then I sleep which is most important of all so I can rejuvenate and get after it again the next day.

The order is critical. Take care of yourself, take care of others, then have fun. You can't have fun if you don't have money and you can't do shit without health.

A balanced day equals a balanced life.

03. Don't lie

Read Lying by Sam Harris. It only takes less than 2 hours to read. A very thought-provoking and life changing book. But what about "white lies" you ask? No good either. Read the book. Trust is the foundation of every relationship. Without trust, there is nothing. We have a trust deficit in the world today because of too many lies. Commit yourself to always telling the truth.

04. Take responsibility

Whatever happens, take responsibility for everything in your life - everything. Own it. Jocko Willink's TED Talk and book, Extreme Ownership, are recent examples of this topic but I first learned it from a chapter called "The 7 Lies of Success" in the book, Unlimited Power, by Tony Robbins when I began leading a sales team in 2002. Placing blame makes you powerless and gets you nowhere. Some people believe the world affects them while other people affect the world. Affect the world by taking responsibility and you will instantly become a leader instead of a victim.

05. solve problems

Solving problems makes me happy. Shit happens and when it does, rather than whining and getting mad just fix it. Be resourceful, get help if you need to. Being mad is a waste of energy.

06. set a good example

I was 23 when my son was born and he changed my life for the better. I made setting a good example for him my number one mantra. "Do as I say, not as I do" doesn't work. Kids are watching. I stopped doing things that I didn't want him to end up doing and began doing things I wanted him to do. I wasn't always perfect and even then I helped him learn from my mistakes. He learned to do the things I did right and learned not to do the things I did wrong. Don't talk about it, be about it.

07. Know your worth

Don't sell yourself short and don't compromise with people who disrespect you. Let them go.

08. Be humble

Be humble enough to always do the work and know you can improve. Humility is the ultimate form of confidence. I didn't get to where I am in life all alone, I'm always thankful for the people who helped me along the way.

09. Action * Frequency = results

We’re always successful at getting some type of result. Some of us are successful at the result of getting fat. Some of us are successful at being broke. If you don’t like the results you’re getting in life, change your actions and/or change the frequency until you get the results you want.

10. Be Genuinely happy for other people

This is one of the main traits I look for in people and it was the number one rule when I owned a gym. It tells you so much about the other person. Insecure people are incapable of being happy when someone achieves a goal. I'm happy when people make progress. Uplift one another. Give compliments, congratulate, don't hate.

11. Admit when you're wrong

Changing your mind when presented with new evidence is a sign of maturity and confidence. I'm happy when I'm proven wrong because I'm not wrong any more. So many people are too immature, weak, or narcissistic to admit when they are wrong. They double and triple down, say "fake news" or find some other way to weasel out of it. When I'm wrong, I admit it and thank the person. Seek the truth. Think clearly.

12. Eliminate the non-essential, focus on the rest

We only have time for so much. The modern world is constantly competing for our attention, time, and dollars. We are overexposed to everything. We only have so much time and we can't experience everything. Go all-in on about 5 things. Declutter your home, your mind, and relationships and narrow your focus to what matters most to you. It's okay to miss out on some things.

13. Don't watch the news

Seriously, don't watch it. Luckily I read Manufacturing Consent in the early 2000s and avoided watching the news ever since. Within 5 sentences of speaking with someone, it's easy to tell they watch the news (and which channel) by how miserable they are. 24 hour breaking news is an addiction for some people and destroys your brain. Who gives a shit what less than 1% of the population is doing? The Sunday paper is the maximum along with some reputable monthly magazines. This is the greatest time ever to be alive, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Leave the news and news-watchers alone.

More to come...
